Does the drug plaquenil cause hair loss

The chance of helping for autoimmune (especially scarring alopecias) is high. Hydroxychloroquine does not help all hair loss types but does help conditions such as lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, pseudopelade and discoid lupus.

This drug is also referred to under its popular trade name “Plaquenil” Hydroxychloroquine is a type of anti-inflammatory medication used to treat some types of hair loss such as lichen planopilaris and sometimes discoid lupus and frontal fibrosing alopecia. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition resulting in hair loss and complete baldness alopecia totalis. Published evidence says that it is mediated by T-lymphocytes. Plaquenil is an anti-inflammatory drug approved by the FDA for malaria, lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Generally as a drug-related side effect, the hair loss is not drastic and the hair does not fall out in patches. And it usually grows back after you stop taking the drug. But if you have inherited male or female pattern baldness, arthritis medications could trigger or accelerate such permanent hair loss.

Other times though, the cause of the shedding locks could be the medications used to treat arthritis. People with autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and lupus, can experience hair loss as a troubling symptom of their disease.
